3. The Trinity

Articles:

* The TrinityBy Dr Mark Bird
Excerpt:
"So what does the Bible teach about the Trinity? It clearly affirms the existence of three distinct Persons that are all identified as the one God of the universe. This is not a contradiction because we are not saying that God is both one person and three persons. Nor are we saying that God is both one god and three gods. We are saying that God is one in essence and three in Person. There is one "what," and there are three "whos." As you can see, God is one and three in different ways. Just as the one universe exists as space, time, and matter, the one God exists as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit."Read Article

** A Look at the Trinity from a Messianic Jewish PerspectiveBy Richard Harvey
Excerpt:
"Christians consider themselves monotheists, while Jewish tradition maintains that believers in a triunity of God reject monotheism. Yet the Hebrew Scriptures do imply some kind of plurality in the Divinity. Why else would Jewish sages offer various alternatives to explain those implications, particularly in Genesis 1:26? Evaluate the following methods our forebears used to deal with the text."Read Article

"There is one great event, which every day attracts more admiration than do the sun, and moon, and stars, when they march in their courses. That event is, the death of our Lord Jesus Christ. To it, the eyes of all the saints who lived before the Christian era were always directed; and backwards, through the thousand years of history, the eyes of all modern saints are looking. Upon Christ, the angels in heaven perpetually gaze."Read Article

* Christ Crucified - Sermon #7By Charles Spurgeon
Excerpt:
"It is a stumblingblock. If you had stepped in anywhere where you had heard formalism exalted: if you had been told "this must you do, and this other must you do, and then you will be saved," you would highly approve of it. But how many are there externally religious, with whose characters you could find no fault, but who have never had the regenerating influence of the Holy Ghost; who never were made to lie prostrate on their face before Calvary's cross; who never turned a wistful eye to yonder Saviour crucified; who never put their trust in him that was slain for the sons of men. They love a superficial religion, but when a man talks deeper than that, they set it down for cant. You may love all that is external about religion, just as you may love a man for his clothes—caring nothing for the man himself. If so, I know you are one of those who reject the gospel."Read Article
* Grace Abounding - Sermon #501By Charles Spurgeon
Excerpt:
"The love of God goes forth to men when they have no thought after him; when they are hastening after all manner of sin and wantonness. He loves them freely, and as the effect of that love, they then begin to seek his face. But it is not our seeking, our prayers, our tears, which incline the Lord to love us. God loves us at first most freely, without any entreaties or beseechings, and then we come both to entreat and to beseech his favor."Read Article

* How To Be Reconciled With GodBy Dr. John MacArthur
Excerpt:
"Not only is God's glory the issue in the very death of Christ, which protects His glory, which preserves His righteousness, displays His righteousness, but all who come to Him through the cross and the provision of Christ become a part of those who glorify Him, so that He is glorified in the very act of Christ and He is glorified in the redemption which that act provides. We, Paul says, bring about the obedience of faith. That is we proclaim the gospel, people believe and obey the gospel, coming to faith and that for His namesake...for the glory of His name."Read Article

B. By Negating His Role As Sole Mediator/High Priest

How can prayer be wrong? How can meditation be wrong? You have really gone overboard on this one! How they are wrong is really quite simple. They are wrong when the Sole Mediation of Jesus Christ before the eternal Holy God for us and His provisions of grace through His Word and Spirit - ARE EXCHANGED - for methods and techniques and mystical touching of the holy - by our own doings! It is something else displacing someone else as the basis of mediation between God and men. And the result is, by putting it in the context of the Gospels, instead of "Jesus as the Way" we now have "the Way of Jesus" as the emphasis of a super-spiritual and totally disfigured "Christianity." This is movement back to the dark ages.

"Is it possible that we have left Christ out of Christianity? Are the faith & practice of American Christians today more American than Christian? Have we allowed the church to be taken captive to the prevailing culture? These are the provocative questions Michael Horton addresses in this thoughtful, insightful book. His analysis should give us pause as we consider the current state of Christianity - even evangelical Christianity - in America."

focused truth: Summary

–The Lord Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man.

He was sent by the Father into the world, incarnate in the Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit. Throughout His earthly ministry, He lived a perfect and holy life before God as His Only Begotten Son. He taught, performed miracles, and finally died on the cross, shedding His blood for sin. His sacrifice was perfect and complete, once for all, the just for the unjust. Further, He was raised from the dead, declared with power the Son of God. He is now raised at the right hand of God and will soon return again: visibly, powerfully, in salvation and judgment. And, He will establish His Kingdom forever.

The "focus" of truth is the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ who died on Calvary, not anything or anyone else. If you do not know Jesus Christ, repent of sin and believe in Him, and you will know Him. Know Him, and you will love Him. Love Him and you will serve Him. Serve Him and you will long for His return!
